What is Youth Parliament?
Youth Parliament is held in Yellowknife at the Northwest Territory Legislative Assembly each spring. It’s an opportunity for students in grade 9 and 10 from the 19 ridings across the territory to assume the role of an MLA and learn about the Legislative Assembly and Consensus Government in the NWT.
During the week students will research community concerns, meet with their MLA to talk about the issues, write a Members’ statement representing their riding, learn how a Bill becomes a law, hold a mock session, ask questions during question period – and have lots of fun!
When is it?
Youth parliament takes place each spring.
Who can apply?
Any student across the NWT in grades 9 or 10 can apply.
Each year, school principals are asked to provide application information to eligible students in their schools. All applications are considered and one student from each riding is selected to represent their Member of the Legislative Assembly.
All expenses are paid and includes airfare, accommodation, meals, and any scheduled activities.
