Construction in Capital Area

(YELLOWKNIFE) July 3, 2020 -- The water supply system that supplies the Legislative Assembly building and Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre will be replaced this summer.

The Legislative Assembly has developed a project to replace aging water supply infrastructure that has been experiencing failures at an increasing frequency. The project will ensure the Legislative Assembly and Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre’s operational integrity is not compromised.

The water supply system connects to the City of Yellowknife’s infrastructure on 49th Avenue and follows the Ceremonial Walking Trail to the Legislative Assembly building. The system will be replaced in three phases:  49th Avenue to the Ceremonial Circle; Ceremonial Circle to the Museum; and from the Museum to the Legislative Assembly building.

The Ceremonial Walking Trail will be resurfaced and accessible to the public as each section is completed. However, residents can expect disruptions to trail access as the project progresses. For the safety of pedestrians who wish to continue to access the walkway, the Legislature asks that signage please be observed and obeyed.

The surface removal is set to begin on Monday, July 6th, and work will continue throughout the summer until they reach the Legislative Assembly Building. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of September, and will cost approximately two million dollars.
