Debates of , (day 7)

Mr. Speaker, obviously the arts and crafts sector is very important. It’s something our government wants to support. We are certainly prepared to investigate the future of the Holman print shop. I will be in Ulukhaktok next week with the Member. We are also planning to bring the regional superintendent, so that is probably the most opportune time for us to have a tour of the facility and make sure the mayor is able to talk to our regional superintendent so we can ensure some follow-up. I will commit to doing that and making myself available for that meeting. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , (day 7)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. We will approach it on a business case basis. Obviously it’s the BDIC that would have to make a determination or decision as to whether or not they are prepared to make an investment into a new subsidiary. Since it was rolled up or closed some time ago, I am not sure of the condition of the assets anymore. I am not sure what the investment or the requirement would be, but I would say that I know the community is very proud of their history and their ability in the field in print making. I have seen a number of the prints on my last visit to Holman. In fact, I...

Debates of , (day 7)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, the Premier has spoken about the potential of the Northwest Territories to develop more of its energy resources in response to rising energy costs faced by our residents.

Looking forward, it is critical that our territory has a coordinated and comprehensive approach to the development, management and use of energy resources in the NWT.

At the appropriate time today, I will be tabling an energy discussion paper titled “Energy for the Future.” This discussion paper was jointly prepared by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment and also the...

Mr. Speaker, I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Deh Cho, that Bill 4, An Act to Amend the Supplementary Retiring Allowances Act, be read for the third time. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , (day 6)

Mr. Speaker, I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Deh Cho, that Bill 12, Garnishment Remedies Statutes Amendment Act, be read for the second time.

Mr. Speaker, this bill amends the Creditors Relief Act to provide that the wages or salary or a debtor may be garnished for a period of one year. Other incidental amendments are made to the act in respect of this amendment. The Exemptions Act is amended to exempt 70 percent of a judgment debtor's wages or salary from garnishment, subject to a minimum amount that may be prescribed. The Territorial Court Act is amended to revise the...

Debates of , (day 6)

Mr. Speaker, I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Deh Cho, that Bill 8, Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment Act, 2006, be read for the second time.

Mr. Speaker, this bill corrects inconsistencies and errors in the statutes of the Northwest Territories. The bill deals with other matters of a minor, non-controversial and uncomplicated nature in the statutes, and also repealed provisions that have ceased to have effect. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , (day 6)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. There are a number of regional economic development conferences that have either been hosted or are in the planning stages and not necessarily headed up by our department, but our department has participated in and will continue to participate in these. It is something that I am certainly prepared to discuss. I think, as this business program review comes forward and we talk about improvements, there is some merit to pulling business interests and stakeholders together to discuss what we are thinking needs to be done. So that is something that we can certainly...
