Statements in Debates

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 58)

Just one more thing. I know in the past it has been the practice to go to the auction house but also to some fur auctions and also take harvesters from the communities, usually one from each region.

I’d like to ask the Minister, do they plan to do that? I was actually one of them that went to North Bay back in I think it was ’97 or something. It’s really interesting. You know, you see the whole process right from when you harvest it to handling and they even show you, pick out one fur and just put down the tag number and it tells you where it came from. It’s a very interesting process and it...

That’s good. Thank you.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 58)

Thank you, Mr. Chair. I just wanted to ask, under the wilderness camps, how many camps does that funding represent? Is that one in each region or what is the breakdown per camp that is out there? Thank you, Mr. Chair.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 58)

Thank you, Mr. Chair. I just have two concerns to bring up. As I mentioned earlier in some questions to the Minister, policing is still an ongoing issue in Tsiigehtchic. In the past we did have RCMP in the community, and ever since, I believe it was the late ‘60s, early ‘70s, that was taken out of the community. Since then the community has wanted to have the presence of the RCMP back in the community. We feel that if we could have RCMP in a community half our size, there’s no reason why we can’t have RCMP in our community.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 57)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I have a couple of questions for the Minister of Justice. It’s been almost a year now since there was an offer for proposals to offer on-the-land programming in the Mackenzie Delta region. Why did it take so long and also has the department selected a successful candidate to offer the program? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 57)

Mr. Speaker, that’s great. In the past we had a great program offered just outside of Aklavik.

When does the Minister see the programs starting again in the Delta region? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 57)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I too will say a few words on the budget dialogue that has happened over the last three years. When this first began in one of the communities we even had a peaceful demonstration, which showed great support for the Inuvik-Tuk Highway Project and that is one of our priorities that we have undertaken over the last couple of years. Also with the Fibre Optic Link.

Those investments in the Beaufort-Delta region really needed to happen. Before that it was very slow up in the region, but now there’s a lot of jobs happening over the winter season, a lot of people working, a...

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 57)

I’d just like to ask the Minister, what type of facility is required to offer this program? Thank you.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 56)

Thank you. A number of years back, I think it was in the mid ‘80s or so, there was the HAP program. A number of people took advantage of that in the communities. Residents were given the opportunity for materials and it was up them to either put in labour or a lot of them constructed their own houses throughout the territory in all the communities. There are a lot of people out there that would like to see a similar program like that moving forward. Are the Minister and the department looking at that sort of program in the near future?

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 56)

Thank you, Mr. Chair. I just want to ask a quick question to the Premier. It seems like a lot of these positions are, well, they are all out here in headquarters. I’d like to ask the Premier, when do they plan to decentralize some of these positions?
