Statements in Debates

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 11)

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I would just like to commend the Executive on what was mentioned; the single-window service centres that are in some of the communities there. I know there’s been great success in Aklavik and I’m glad to see that extending to another five communities, including Tsiigehtchic. I think that’s a very good initiative by the department and I look forward to the outcome of that.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 11)

The next item I’d like to ask about is home care. At the moment we have one part-time person in Tsiigehtchic and I believe only one person in Fort McPherson. That’s not adequate for the needs of the communities. I’d like to ask the Minister if there are plans to make a full-time position in Tsiigehtchic and add one or two more people in Fort McPherson. Thank you, Madam Chair.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 11)

Mr. Speaker, I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Kam Lake, that Bill 3, An Act to Amend the Human Rights Act, be read for the first time. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 10)

Thank you, Mr. Chair. I’d like to raise a few concerns that I have with what’s before us. Many a time we’ve brought up the need for a nurse in the community of Tsiigehtchic and all the small communities. It’s something that we struggle with. Many a time the residents in the smaller communities are put in situations where they have to respond to these situations and I don’t think it’s fair to our residents. I think it’s very important that this government put in place, in all the communities, a nurse.

As an interim, one thing, we don’t have a long-term care facility in the Mackenzie Delta, which...

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 10)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Today my Member’s statement will be on the price of fuel. Before I get into that, many people in the Mackenzie Delta right now are out on the land boating, hunting muskrats, ducks, enjoying life up there. One of their biggest challenges is the price of fuel.

In Aklavik many residents pay $1.88 for one litre of gas. In Tsiigehtchic it’s $1.77. In Fort McPherson, which was the least expensive in the Mackenzie Delta, it’s $1.65.

Many people in Aklavik would like to see some type of subsidy for their gas. The gasoline in Tsiigehtchic is subsidized but, as you can tell, it...

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 10)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I give notice that on Friday, June 8, 2012, I will move the following motion: Now therefore I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Kam Lake, that Ms. Nitya Iyer be appointed as the Equal Pay Commissioner in accordance with the Public Service Act by the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories as recommended the Legislative Assembly;

And further, that the Speaker be authorized to communicate the effective date of the appointment to the Commissioner.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 9)

No further questions.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 9)

Thank you, Madam Speaker. I give notice that on Thursday, June 7, 2012, I will move that Bill 3, An Act to Amend the Human Rights Act, be read for the first time. Thank you.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 9)

Thank you, Madam Speaker. I have a couple of questions for the Minister of ITI. I’d like to ask the Minister, I see we’ve had some great prices in the fur industry, are there plans this year to take hunters and youth on a tour of the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Auction House. I know it was done in the past.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 3rd Session (day 9)

Thank you, Madam Chair. I’m just looking at your statements that were made. I know the community of Tsiigehtchic, for many years, has been pursuing the need for RCMP. I’m hoping within the next year here we can see the community constable position sort of geared towards communities that don’t have policing. I know it’s pretty well open to the whole Northwest Territories at this time, but I think we need to work with the communities that do not have police present in the communities. It’s quite clear that the communities want something in place to make the people feel safe. I feel that a...
