Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I won't be as long. Mr. Speaker, I'd like to welcome all the Official Languages and Aboriginal Languages Revitalization board members, and also, in particular, some constituents of mine and relatives from Ulukhaktok, Ms. Emily Kudlak and Ms. Barb Mamogana, and also Ms. Beverly Amos from Inuvik. I just want to say thank you for all the hard work you do in keeping our language strong.

Mr. Speaker, earlier on in this sitting I said, with all the language and culture of Indigenous groups so prevalent today through colonization, Mr. Speaker, there is a core that is unshakable...

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Implementation

During the public review, the Auditor General stated that he wants the audits done by his office to have real and meaningful outcomes for citizens. He made the pointed observation that, for this to happen, it is important for the Department to stay focused not only on the actions it is implementing in response to the audit, but on whether those actions are achieving the desired outcome of having real, meaningful impacts on community residents. He further observed that doing so aligns with the department’s vision of “responsible, responsive governments,”...

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 64)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, we often hear the terms "traditional knowledge," "Indigenous knowledge," and "local knowledge" used interchangeably, without really stopping to think what they really mean.

Local knowledge is everywhere, Mr. Speaker, even here at the Legislative Assembly. Every community in the Northwest Territories has local knowledge. Local knowledge comes out of what our daily practice is and is specific to the place and time that we live in. It is shared by a group of individuals who are united by the similar experience of living or spending time in a particular locale...

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I'd to welcome two Pages from Inualthuyak School in Sachs Harbour: Rosanne Lennie and Agnes Amos, as well as their chaperone, Margaret Noksana. Welcome to the Legislative Assembly, and I look forward to working with you all this week and hope you can put up with us.

Also, Mr. Speaker, the Senior Cager basketball tournament was held here in Yellowknife over the weekend, and we have a team from Helen Kalvak School, the under 15 boys' team, who are in the gallery, and their teacher. I'm going to give you their names: Kolten Inuktalik, Mitchell Inuktalik, Kyran...

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 63)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Earlier on, I spoke about the Arctic Renewable Energy Networks Academy. My questions are for the Minister of ITI. Mr. Speaker, my first question to the Minister is: what progress is the department making on climate change, framework, and the energy strategy? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 63)

Quyanainni, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, it is with great pleasure that I share with you some of the excellent work being led by our colleagues at the Arctic Council and Permanent Participant Gwich'in Council International on the issue of renewable energy, an area that this government is active in through such initiatives at the Solar Energy Strategy and the Alternative Energy Technology Program.

Later this month, the Arctic Renewable Energy Networks Academy -- abbreviated to ARENA -- will kick off here in Yellowknife. It is a nine-month program for 20 individuals from the Circumpolar Arctic to...

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 63)

That answered my second question. Mr. Speaker, my final question for the Minister is: how is the Government of the Northwest Territories supporting the Arctic Renewable Energy Networks Academy’s ARENA initiative?

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 63)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I, too, also want to wish Mr. and Mrs. Williams a happy anniversary, and also former NHLers, Hall of Famers, and Stanley Cup champions Bryan Trottier and Tyler Kennedy. I know Mr. Trottier has done a lot of work up in Nunakput region and, every time we get NHLers or individuals who can influence people through television and in person, it means a lot for our territory. Welcome and thank you for all of your dedication and hard work. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 62)

Thank you, Mr. Chair. I won't double up on what my colleague, Mr. Nadli, had to say, but getting back to self-government negotiations and where each land claiming group stands right now and looking forward. I think we all have similar issues, but also very, very different issues in all of our regions in the territory given the structure of self-government and, as well, how the government relationships are working between each region in the GNWT.

I think as much of a struggle as it is for our regions, I think the Northwest Territories is probably the closest government to work with so many...
