Statements in Debates

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 83)

Thank you, Madam Chair. Yeah, I just want to make sure that this stays on the books for my community of Tuk, and any time it's for small communities, they're ready to get cut. And I really think that we should be taking a real good serious look at everything else that's paid everywhere else in the bigger communities, bigger centres and that, as soon as it starts to come to the communities, we're the first thing they're looking at cutting. So if they want to start cutting, go start cutting. So it's really upsetting, I guess, to make sure that we're bringing projects forward for the communities...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 83)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I just -- no, I don't want to take away all the good work that's been done by my leadership by our government in regards to providing all the help they could with the health and our medical staff up in Tuk have been awesome. They flew in people, Arlene Jorgensen. Thank her so much in regards to the service that she's been doing for the people. But this is the biggest thing, is to make sure that we are able -- if we're able to help the community in paying their bills instead of shortchanging, taking busing away from here, and doing -- taking other monies...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 83)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. So all the -- I guess across the territory, that includes everybody that has a -- was locked down, our COVID Secretariat with the outbreak for the isolation centre. What about the road, the check stops? Is the community going to be reimbursed for that through MACA because it's coming out of the local community's purse. And that shouldn't be. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 83)

Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, it took 18 months for the pandemic to finally hit my riding of Nunakput. The first scare we had was in Ulukhaktok and I really want to thank our mayor Josh Oliktoak and his staff and the health centre staff that did the awesome job to contain that, and then we didn't really have an outbreak there.

But unfortunately it came to Tuk. I want to thank the community leadership, my mayor Erwin Elias, the TCC chair, and all the nurses and the health care workers, and the Rangers, who have been working nonstop to take care of our people. And I also want to thank our health care...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 80)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Today I'd like to thank what Madam Premier just brought up about the Dene Nation walk for the 215 that we lost there in Kamloops. Our thoughts and prayers are with them from Nunakput. And, you know, as a third generation survivor as yourself, myself, Diane and Paulie, we're all in residential school in Inuvik and it's just like a sister and brotherhood, you know, when you see them. It's a special thing, that bond you have with them. And we'll get through it. And we're still standing.

Mr. Speaker, I'd also like to  let people, you know, up since the last month for the...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 79)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. That's why, Mr. Speaker, I brought up my Member's statement this last week in regards to travel for medical, medical travel. And this is a part of it. So somebody misses this is a chain effect. And, you know, if we could stop that, it would be good. I know our staff works hard, her staff works hard in regards to making sure that people are getting out there and getting served, but there's got to be a way that we could work towards it again to make prescreening, because we're losing a lot of people, a lot of good people that shouldn't be. It shouldn't be having to take...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 79)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, you know, I've been talking to a few constituents over the last few weeks and sitting at home, we've been really having an increase in cancer, stage 4. I hear a lot of stage 4 cancer in my constituents. I have people that are you know, that need a little bit of help here.

Mr. Speaker, I'm asking the Minister if she could start doing again, I guess prescreening of cancer patients in the riding across the NWT if she can for, you know, colorectal cancer, any kind of cancer, that's higher rates in our territory. If that's possible to start providing, I guess...
