Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 70)

Welcome back, colleagues. I would like to make a few remarks before we begin.

My home community of Tuktoyaktuk was hit with a major winter storm on Sunday. Mayor Darrel Nasogaluak declared a state of emergency when blizzard conditions were responsible for a power outage that affected the entire community.

I am pleased to report that power has now been restored to the community. I would like to extend my thanks to Mayor Nasogaluak and his administration for ensuring that everyone in Tuk was well cared for during the power outage. Everyone was kept safe and warm.

A big thank you also goes out to...

Good afternoon, colleagues. Before we start today, I’d just like to send a message to my family in my home community of Tuktoyaktuk. Before we begin today, I would like to take a moment to extend the condolences of this Legislative Assembly, our Members and our staff, to the family of Mrs. Barb Bromley on her recent passing. Mrs. Bromley was a long-time Yellowknifer, nurse, volunteer, community activist and the mother of the Member for Weledeh, Mr. Bob Bromley.

Mrs. Bromley came to Yellowknife in 1948 with her fiancé, Peter. Shortly after their arrival, they were married and soon Mrs. Bromley, a recent nursing graduate, was working at the Red Cross Hospital. Over the years that followed, Mrs...

Good afternoon, colleagues. Before we begin, I would like to take a moment to remember and honour family and friends who have recently passed on. When our small communities lose a family member, we all feel the loss.

Ida was born in Aklavik on March 20, 1945, to Johnny and Ruth Kayotuk, and grew up with her siblings, Moses, Leland, Eva and Lena. Ida attended school in Aklavik and later Stringer Hall in Inuvik, where she met a lot of people and made a lot of friends...

Good afternoon, colleagues. Thank you to Ms. Brace and her grades 3 and 4 choir from Mildred Hall School for their wonderful rendition of O Canada.

Colleagues, today we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the national flag of Canada. It was on February 15, 1965, that our iconic flag, with its distinctive red and white maple leaf design, first flew proudly on Parliament Hill in our nation’s capital. In 1996, February 15th was declared National Flag of Canada Day to mark the introduction of Canada’s national flag.

At its inauguration in 1965, the Speaker of the Senate declared, “The flag is the...
