Debates of , 16th Assembly, 5th Session (day 16)

The day-to-day operations of an organization, whether or not the leader is there every day or not is largely -- and the Premier knows this as a leader of this organization -- the leadership is a huge piece of the good working and productivity and contentment of the folks who work in the headquarters in Hay River.

Mr. Speaker, the NWT hydro piece, which is a subsidiary of the NWT Power Corporation, having to come here to do that work when the Taltson is located in the South Slave. Hay River is in the South Slave. We as a government have got to look for ways of sustaining the smaller communities...

Debates of , 16th Assembly, 5th Session (day 15)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. It is a privilege and an honour to stand in the Assembly today and pay tribute to Mr. Whitford. I knew Mr. Whitford before I came here as an MLA 15 years ago when I used to come here on various causes and crusades to lobby the government about things. That was back when he was an MLA. He probably remembers me from those days too.

As Mr. Miltenberger has said, MLA, Minister, Speaker, Sergeant-at-Arms, Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner, now honorary officer of this Legislative Assembly, very much deserved. He is the type of person that can be many things to many people. He...

Debates of , 16th Assembly, 5th Session (day 15)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I started off this sitting of the Legislative Assembly raising a concern about a medical professional practising in the Northwest Territories who I had serious concerns about.

As a result of some follow-up with the Department of Health, Mr. Speaker, I was able to determine that a new Medical Profession Act was passed and came into force on April 6th -- so just over a month ago -- so complaints after the date of April 6th are now managed under the new act.

The new act gives a disciplinary board and the investigator better and up-to-date tools, temporary suspension, a...

Debates of , 16th Assembly, 5th Session (day 15)

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I am sure that all the details of this particular undertaking will be ironed out, but I think it’s very important to make sure that there are ways of ensuring that people who want to sign on-line petitions identify themselves and their identity can be confirmed. Thank you.

Debates of , 16th Assembly, 5th Session (day 14)

Mr. Speaker, the MLAs for Hay River were involved in a process with the then-CEO of the hospital, Mr. Al Woods, and the public administrator of the hospital, of also receiving a lot of information about prospective sites for the new hospital. At that time I believe it was determined that the ENR/ITI site was the most suitable site. However, I appreciate that Public Works has done their homework and that there may be a better alternative.

Mr. Speaker, how does the proposed site of the Sundog industrial area, how does that take into account the issue of it being on the west side of the railway...

Debates of , 16th Assembly, 5th Session (day 14)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I have questions about the proposed location for the new hospital in Hay River. I’m not sure if I should ask my questions to the Minister of Public Works or the Minister of Health and Social Services, but let’s go with the Minister of Public Works.

Mr. Speaker, we have, for many years, had a desire and a need for a new hospital in Hay River. This is something that, Mr. Speaker, yourself and myself over the years have worked on. We have had a little slippage. We haven’t stayed right on the front of the line for this capital project. It’s a very big project...
