Debates of , (day 16)

Thank you. Is that a motion, you move to report progress?

Debates of , (day 16)

Mr. Speaker, I am not in a position to police Mr. Zoe’s conduct as a Member, to follow him around and see what he is going to do. Yes, there are programs, people need to avail themselves of those programs. But if they don’t want to, it is not my job to ensure that they do. To suggest, Mr. Speaker, that Mr. Zoe’s political career will be ended by sitting on this side of the House is something else that I reject. What do all of us do here in representation of our constituents if this is not an honourable task to perform on behalf of our constituents? So I will be supporting the motion, Mr...

Debates of , (day 16)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, my final question to the Minister then is in terms of my response to my constituents who have children under the age of 16 who are not able to attend school because they have been suspended for long periods of time. Would it be appropriate to tell those constituents that this government recognizes its obligation to educate these students, and that there will be either some financing or opportunity made available to them just to realize an education? Thank you.

Debates of , (day 15)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, your committee would like to report progress and, Mr. Speaker, I move that the report of Committee of the Whole be concurred with. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , (day 15)

I call Committee of the Whole to order. What is the wish of the committee today? Before I ask that, I think we will call a break.

Sorry, I wasn’t here for the conclusion of Committee of the Whole yesterday. I am sorry. I thought we were still dealing with something. Mr. Menicoche.

Debates of , (day 15)

Thank you. The motion is in order. It’s not debatable. All those in favour of the motion? All those opposed? The motion is carried.

---Carried

I will now rise and report progress.

Debates of , (day 15)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, there are some children in our schools today who, for a variety of reasons, have ongoing behaviour problems and just are not able to function and learn in a regular classroom environment. Unfortunately, in some cases, schools are dealing with this by suspending the students, often for long periods of time. The parents of the students are concerned about what kind of education their children will get if they are forced to be absent from school on a regular basis. Parents and teachers are also concerned about how distractions created by these students with...

Debates of , (day 14)

I call Committee of the Whole to order. What is the wish of the committee? Mr. Menicoche.

Debates of , (day 14)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I am astounded at the Premier’s willingness, given the track record here and given the circumstances; I am still baffled by the one-more-time concept. I don’t know why he would put himself in that kind of exposure. It’s a job. What Mr. Zoe does for this House is a job. We place confidence in people to do certain jobs. Amongst ourselves we say let’s give that person that job. I don’t think he’s doing Mr. Zoe any service by putting this kind of pressure on him. This is not something that somebody has within their own power to change. I think he is putting Mr. Zoe in a...

Debates of , (day 14)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, just in follow-up to that, the Premier is asking the Members of this House to have confidence along with him that something like this is never going to happen again. Mr. Speaker, we all know that these kinds of issues do not go away by themselves. People struggle with these kinds of things their entire lives. This is not something that you can just wave a magic wand. It takes serious effort, serious commitment and serious work in order to overcome some of these things. We know that. So the Premier is asking us to have confidence in him, but how...
