Statements in Debates
Thanks, Madam Chair. I want to thank my colleague from Yellowknife North, asked a bunch of a questions that I was going to start into.
But I think if we don't start to calculate this amount, we just pawn this off on future generations, and that's not a good way of doing business, let alone running a government.
Yeah, when I saw the amount, I was, quite frankly, astounded at how low it is. You know, the diamond mines each the big ones, they have hundreds of millions of dollars set aside in financial security to deal with their closure obligations. And all of our assets to properly dispose...
Thanks, Madam Chair. That's great. I'm not sure I actually got reconciliation of the 90 versus the 126, but I'm just very mindful of how little time I've got left on the clock.
So is this capital budget going to be in compliance with the fiscal responsibility policy? Thank you.
Thanks. And thanks for that commitment. I too, like my colleague from Yellowknife North, I'm concerned about building fibre to a community and then nobody's really going to help people get hooked up to it. So is that going to be just Northwestel's responsibility? What role do we play? Do we expect other third parties to suddenly show up in Tuk and start connecting fibre to people's homes? How is that going to work? Thanks, Madam Chair.
Okay, thanks. So it looks like it would be in the neighborhood of $90 million, is that correct?
Okay. So what we're being asked to approve here is $6 million for next year. Are there further costs beyond this anticipated in future years for GNWT in terms of construction? Thanks, Madam Chair.
Thanks, Madam Chair. I do have some technical questions. So I'm wondering if the Minister may want to have her colleagues with her, or how would you like to do that?
Merci, Monsieur le President. Like many on this planet, I was very disappointed with the lack of concrete progress and agreement at the recent Conference of the Parties 26 or United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. I was happy that the NWT had a delegation there.
What I've heard so far from our government is that we need federal assistance, more Indigenous representation in our delegation, and work with our circumpolar neighbours. Mr. Speaker, that's just not good enough or going to get us where we should and need to be. I'm going to make it easy for my Cabinet colleagues and lay...
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I recognize this is very difficult debate/discussion that we're having. But there is no motion on the floor right now. What we're talking about is a point of privilege raised by the Member for Thebacha. And I believe that Members should keep their remarks to the point of privilege, not a report that hasn't even been tabled in the House. A rule of anticipation, Mr. Speaker, you can't talk about something that hasn't even arrived in the House yet but we expect it. So for a number of reasons, I would suggest that the Member confine his comments to the point of privilege...
point of order.
Thank you, Madam Chair. I move that the Chair rise and report progress.
