Statements in Debates

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 24)

Thanks, Mr Chair. Could the Minister undertake to provide a copy of this report from the Special Committee of the Law Society that I think it was submitted in 2013, and then if there was a departmental response to the recommendations, could he also provide that to the appropriate standing committee? Thanks, Mr. Chair.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 24)

Thanks, Mr. Chair. I appreciate the answer, and it's the policy direction I certainly want to go in. Is this something that the department's going to continue because we just had the North Slave resiliency study that actually recommended against doing this. So what direction is the department going to go in with this? Thanks, Mr. Chair.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 24)

Thanks, Mr. Chair. I'm all for efficiencies. Does the department then have any specific plans on how it is going to monitor access to justice? What specific indicators? Is there going to be satisfaction surveys? I don't know. What are the specific plans of the department to actually monitor and track access to justice and how the department is going to improve on that over the term of this Assembly? Thanks, Mr. Chair.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 24)

Thanks, Mr. Chair. I appreciate that. I know I am the only thing standing between us and dinner. Happy to get that in writing from the Minister. I did have one other question though if I could. Going back to the Minister's opening remarks, he talks about, in his opening remarks, the amalgamation of the liabilities of the financial assurances division and the project assessment branch -- and that is, I think, the section of Lands we are talking about here -- and how there can be some policies and procedures developed, particularly around the area of securities. I keep asking about this stuff...

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 24)

Thanks, Mr. Chair. I'm just not quite still sure how the department is going to monitor this, but I don't think this is the place to follow it up. Thanks, Mr. Chair.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 24)

Thanks, Mr. Chair. Can the department explain how this one-time enhancement came about? Thanks, Mr. Chair.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 23)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker and I appreciate the response from the Minister. I guess the reason why I’m pursuing this in the House today is that the Nunavut Impact Review Board announced its recommendation recently that the Sabina Gold Project should not go ahead on the Nunavut side of the border because of its potential impact on the Bathurst caribou herd and its calving grounds. Now, the position of the Government of the Northwest Territories in that proceeding and that process was that we did not want to see any development in the calving grounds of the Bathurst caribou herd. If we’re going to...

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 23)

I understood, though, that there was an internal restatement within the department where a number of costs that were associated with a library have now been apportioned to the court registries. Can the Minister or his staff confirm that? I think the figure was about $220,000. Can the Minister or his staff confirm that, please?

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 23)

Yes, certainly, I’m talking about Bathurst caribou, specifically the Bathurst caribou herd and that’s the herd that was the subject of the response that the Minister tabled in the House earlier this week. That’s what I’m asking is habitat protection on the NWT side of the border for the Bathurst caribou herd.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 23)

Thanks, Mr. Chair. I believe this is the page where the court library for the Northwest Territories has been cut, including the staff person there. I wanted to start by asking the Minister how the cut of the court library meets the mandate of the 18th Assembly, especially in this regard. Mandate item 4.4.3 reads, “we will seek to improve access to justice in the Northwest Territories by expanding legal outreach programs and expanding public education on programs and services.” I’m wondering if the Minister or his staff can explain how cutting the court library helps us achieve that part of our...
