Statements in Debates
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. The Member is correct; we have a contribution for community-organized searches that may provide contributions to support community-organized search for missing persons. If we go into the definitions -- and I am going to share this with the Member -- it talks about a public search that needs to be conducted by the RCMP and this has to fit into that area. So I’d be willing to provide some of this information to the Member.
Mr. Speaker, as I said before, we are always willing to look at the option of selling public housing units. However, we have to be sure that we are not depleting our stock in that community where we are unable to provide public housing to those that are in need. If there is an excess of public housing units or we are bringing in replacement units, then this is something that we will look at. If we are doing that, then sales should go through as quickly as possible. Thank you.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I’d like to welcome as part of Bring Your Child to Work Day, Mr. Franklin Carpenter, formerly of Sachs Harbour, formerly of Inuvik and now living here in Yellowknife working for the NWT Housing Corporation. He’s here along with his son Will. Welcome to the gallery.
Mr. Speaker, I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Inuvik Boot Lake, that Bill 18, An Act to Repeal the Settlements Act, be read for the second time.
Mr. Speaker, this bill repeals the Settlements Act and makes consequential amendments to other statutes. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
Mr. Speaker, I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Yellowknife South, that Bill 15, An Act to Amend the Fire Prevention Act, be read for the second time.
Mr. Speaker, this bill amends the Fire Prevention Act to enable the fire marshal to apply to the Supreme Court for an order authorizing him or her to take corrective action in respect of a structure or premises if he or she is unable to identify an owner or occupant.
The bill also makes other minor amendments. Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
Mr. Speaker, I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Monfwi, that Bill 19, Municipal Statutes Amendment Act, be read for the second time.
Mr. Speaker, this bill amends the Charter Communities Act, the Cities, Towns and Villages Act and the Hamlets Act. Amendments are made to clarify the process involved when the voters of a municipality, by petition, require council to either make or not make a specific bylaw, including determination of the number of voters who must sign a petition, requirements for a petition and the exclusion of names from a petition. Amendments are made respecting the...
Mr. Speaker, I move, seconded by the honourable Member for Deh Cho, that Bill 16, An Act to Amend the Dog Act, be read for the second time.
Mr. Speaker, this bill amends the Dog Act to:
prohibit a person from causing a dog distress;
enable an officer to take custody of a dog in distress or an abandoned dog;
enable an officer to apply for a warrant to search a place, premises or vehicle where he or she has reason to believe a dog in distress is located, and in exigent situations, to enter a place, premises, other than a dwelling-house, or a vehicle without a warrant;
enable an officer to inspect a...
I can commit to that. I have asked the corporation to give a quick turnaround on this particular issue. Thank you.
Mr. Speaker, it is our goal to try and get people into homeownership, and as the Member had mentioned, the HELP program is one way to transition them into homeownership. Understanding that we do have a lot of seasonal workers in the Northwest Territories, I will follow up on the Member’s suggestion that we look territorial-wide and see if this is a practice that goes on, because a lot of these people will gain permanent employment or gain employment at one time or another and we have to make sure that we have these folks into some of our homeownership units and not have them vacate and then...
I will gather that information and pass it on to the Member. Thank you.
