Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 69)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. The questions are for the Minister responsible for ECE. Mr. Speaker, with all the recent attention of potential changes to the NWT school curriculum in the media and news articles suggesting the NWT is dropping the Alberta curriculum, can the Minister please clarify if a decision has been made to move away from Alberta? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 69)

Thank you, Madam Chair. Yes, that clarifies it. I guess I've got to take the courses. Thank you.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 69)

Thank you, Madam Chair. I, too, am in support of this reduction. It's time that we start to recognize the importance of small businesses. I know that there was an attempt in the last Assembly to try and get the tax rate down to zero, and the government at the time did not even give it time to hit the floor for debate. I am very pleased to see that we have a group here that understands the importance of small businesses and is willing to give them support in whatever way they can. This is one small way to do it. Just as taxes are required for civilization, so is small business required to keep...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 69)

My third question, I guess he answered part of it: why can't the NWT just develop our own curriculum, but it sounds like it's too expensive. Why do we have to partner with another province besides the fact that we're talking about money?

I would also ask the Minister to confirm how the design and the square footage of these units, especially for Hay River, was determined.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 67)

Thank you, Madam Chair. That is good to know because I usually get people asking me where they can buy fur from. I just want to go to Take a Kid Trapping in case I want to take one of my kids.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 67)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I would like to recognize the K'atlodeeche First Nation and the volunteers of this year's K'amba Carnival event, which took place this past weekend on the reserve. We have to appreciate the fact that this event has taken place during a period of uncertainty when it comes to celebrations, requiring social distancing and the many rules set out by our Chief Public Health Officer. I am certain that, to pull this event off, it required ingenuity, dedication, and countless hours by the committee, community, and group of volunteers. It required adapting a long-standing and...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 67)

Thank you, Madam Chair. I'm not sure what else to ask, then, if we don't really have a hell of a lot of responsibility. That will be it. Thank you.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 67)

Thank you, Madam Chair. When the furs go south and I guess because of maybe COVID-related issues and prices are down, will the trappers be compensated or will there be an increase in their compensation to keep them up to a level of kind of where they have been in the past? Thank you, Madam Chair.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 67)

Thank you, Madam Chair. Yes. It's called wildlife and fish, and I haven't heard anything about fish yet. Being from Hay River, I can't go back there if I don't ask questions. I would like to know what percentage of this budget item here goes to the area of fish management, I guess is what I'm asking.
