Statements in Debates

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 21)

Mahsi for that. I know you have a set criteria for the funding because you did mention those other, the different criteria for the grants that people can use, but I have never, ever seen or heard anything in the community that any of that money given to those four areas created employment. That is why my question is: can we have this modified, the criteria changed, so it benefits the community so that they can maybe look at building something or getting a large infrastructure, maybe a community freezer, that type of stuff? Then it creates some employment in other areas, constructing a building...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 21)

Yes, maybe. Something about that emerging leaders program, my work with Infrastructure as a project officer, I did take the first level of that training, emerging managers program. My manager at the time allowed me to go, but that is as far as it got. The other two levels were off-limits to me. So it's mostly geared for people who are in actual management positions, to enhance their roles, and stopped a person like me. I am a prime example. I can tell you I applied for a manager position. I was not even considered for an interview or any transition, so there are problems within the departments...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 21)

We always have post-secondary students who are looking for work and stuff. It's good to bring them into the folds and job-shadow people, even for the summer, so it gets their interest up. I am wondering if you can provide me a breakdown just to show me how many are actual Dene people in your positions there. Mahsi.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 16)

Nurse practitioners are left to their own devices, so to speak. Can the Minister provide assurances and action to develop an evaluation program for health centre nurse practitioners for the small communities?

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 16)

Mahsi, Mr. Speaker. The residents of my community of Fort Providence are up in arms over the services provided at the local health centre. Most who I have spoken with state they no longer want to deal with the local health centre and are reaching out to other health centres in the outlying communities. Residents are constantly being mistreated, misdiagnosed, and being brushed off for any assistance, even with compensation forms that are required to file a disability claim. Medical travel is in question as patient escorts are not being provided for serious ailments to people being diagnosed...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 16)

I think the evaluation program that I am referencing is in relation to evaluations of nurse practitioners and how they conduct their work within the communities. That's what I was referring to. I understand that complaints are filed with the Registered Nurses Association of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. I, myself, have filed a complaint on behalf of several residents back in November 2019. There has been no action on this file, no notices or acknowledgments that they were received from that association. The Minister stated on February 27, 2020, that the department does conduct...

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 16)

Mahsi, Mr. Speaker. My questions are to the health Minister regarding concerns raised by local residents of the health centre. Mr. Speaker, I've raised this issue with the Minister on February 27, 2020, on the same issue: the issues that residents are having with nurse practitioners at the local health centre. This continues to be a serious issue. Residents want action, and they want action now. Can the Minister provide assurances to the residents of Fort Providence that this issue can be looked to as soon as possible? Mahsi.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 15)

Has the department done any analysis or assessment of succession planning best practices, and are these being incorporated into our human resources practices?

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 15)

Mahsi, Mr. Speaker. I mentioned in my Member's statement that the succession planning document "20/20: A Brighter Future" was released in 2009. I began my career with the GNWT in 2008 with the Department of Public Works and Services. That was about 11 years ago. For 11 years I was in employment, I never ever got moved up into any position. Perhaps if I stayed another 11 years, I would have been an antique. My question to the Minister is: does the GNWT still practice succession planning? Mahsi.

Debates of , 19th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 15)

Mahsi, Madam Chair. Getting back to the land use planning and the GNWT's intent to create a revised Public Land Act, from what I'm reading here, it says they are going to conduct regional land use planning and coordinate the GNWT input into land use planning processes. It also further states that they will work with external planning partners, including Indigenous governments. I'm wondering if these planning partners that are Indigenous are the ones that signed on to devolution, because there is no mention of consulting with the claimant groups, the Dehcho First Nations or the Akaitcho Treaty...
