Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 20)

Thank you to the Minister for that. If you’re talking about this, I guess I’d like to get some sense of where the department is wanting to go on this, and secondly, are you in conversation with the school boards at the same time that you’re discussing it?

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 20)

Thank you. I guess I would ask the Minister, once they have evaluated these two JK projects that were ongoing in ’13-14 if committee could be apprised of the results of the evaluation. Thank you.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 20)

Mr. Chair, that’s good. That’s all I have. Thank you, Mr. Chair.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 20)

Thank you, Mr. Chair. Committee would like to continue with Tabled Document 22-17(5), NWT Main Estimates 2014-14, continuing with Education, Culture and Employment and, time permitting, Transportation and then Environment and Natural Resources. Thank you.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 20)

Mr. Chair, I just wanted to comment on the funding for Skills Canada. I’m very pleased to see that there. I think that this is an excellent program. The department, I think, recognizes that it is as well. I think it’s only been expanding over the last number of years. We’ve gone from $35,000 from 2012-13 and we skipped last year and we now have $70,000 in 2014-15. The Skills Canada group have been doing a great deal to expand into all areas of the territory outside of just Yellowknife. I think that’s a great program that we are back to funding. Now I’m really confused. I guess I need to ask the Minister if I could get the detailed page that he read from. I thought I heard him say Aboriginal Languages Secretariat.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 20)

Would I be able to find out when that review might be available?

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 20)

Thanks to the Minister for that. I look forward to seeing that report. In the program delivery details, labour and career development, there’s a fairly large increase from 2013-14 to 2014-15. Could I get an explanation of what the increase is funding? Thank you.

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 19)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. As Mrs. Groenewegen has mentioned, there’s a bit of a pink glow in the Chamber today and that’s because it is Pink Shirt Day. It’s Pink Shirt Day here and across Canada. For the third year in a row, NWT MLAs are acknowledging the importance of this initiative to combat bullying, and for the third year in a row we are not alone.

In the last two years, the Anti-Bullying Campaign has gathered momentum across North America and across the NWT. NWT students, educators and education authorities have developed and implemented strategies, awareness and resources to deal with the...

Debates of , 17th Assembly, 5th Session (day 19)

Mr. Chair, as Mr. Bromley stated, this is a huge section. I appreciate that you are allowing us to come back and ask different sets of questions, because there is every one of these three sections we could spend a good five minutes on.

It’s kind of hard for me to know where to start, but I think I’ll start with some questions about the junior kindergarten, and I’ll follow up where Mr. Bromley left off, to a certain extent.

I read the activity descriptions and I look at the early childhood development and learning division, and it states program and curriculum development for children from early...
