Standing Committee on Accountability and Oversight Removes Chair

YELLOWKNIFE (Friday, May 14, 2021) - Today, Members of the Standing Committee on Accountability and Oversight voted to remove MLA Steve Norn as Chair of the Committee.

MLA Kevin O’Reilly, as Deputy Chair, will assume the role of Committee Chair until a new Chair is elected.

The Committee took this step to ensure that its focus remains on keeping the government accountable as the territory navigates the ongoing pandemic, the flooding in the Deh Cho region, and the work of the Legislative Assembly.

The eleven Regular Members of the Legislative Assembly comprise the Standing Committee on Accountability and Oversight. The Committee has a wide mandate: it reviews issues with government-wide implications; reviews Government of the Northwest Territories reports on financial and performance results as well as program and policy evaluations to ensure anticipated outcomes are being achieved and accountability is maximized; and coordinates Sessional business scheduling and planning in cooperation with appropriate Ministerial representatives, among other initiatives.

In addition to its own mandate, the Committee acts as a coordinating body for the work of other Standing Committees.
