City of Yellowknife and Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly Celebrate “Winter Lights Across Canada”

YELLOWKNIFE (Thursday, December 1, 2022) – The Mayor of Yellowknife, Her Worship Rebecca Alty, and the Speaker of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, the Honourable Frederick Blake Jr., are pleased to invite the public to join them in celebrating “Winter Lights Across Canada” on Thursday, December 8th, 2022.

“Winter Lights Across Canada” is an annual Government of Canada initiative where monuments and important sites are illuminated in a display of holiday lights across the country on the same night. This event brings together Canadians in their communities so everyone can participate and join in the spirit of the season. The City of Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly are excited to take part in this festive tradition.

Members of the public are invited to come enjoy the festivities. The schedule will take place in Yellowknife as follows:

4:45PM: Gather at the Somba K’e amphitheater and watch Mayor Alty signal for the illumination of the dazzling lights display at Somba K’e Civic Plaza and City Hall.

5:00PM: From City Hall, walk to the Legislative Assembly by following the holiday lights on the pathway from the Museum and warm up with hot beverages and cookies courtesy of the Sundog Trading Post, enjoy live music from the Sir John Franklin Jazz Band, and view Christmas trees decorated by kindergarteners from Yellowknife, Ndılǫ and Dettah. Watch Speaker Blake turn on the lights in the Great Hall and welcome a special visitor from the North Pole!

“I look forward to lighting up Somba K’e Civic Plaza and City Hall again this year. As the days are getting longer and darker, the lights always add such cheer and joy to the days. I look forward to seeing residents for this annual festive event,” says Mayor Alty.

“I invite everyone to take part in Winter Lights Across Canada, a wonderful holiday tradition, that we are excited to reintroduce this year,” says Speaker Blake. “This holiday season, let us all take the time to appreciate our family and friends, and be thankful for the privilege of living in this great Territory. I look forward to welcoming everyone to the Great Hall to enjoy live music, refreshments, and a special visitor from the North Pole”.
