Great Slave MLA Introduces Private Member’s Bill Aimed at Changing Constituency Name

YELLOWKNIFE (November 1, 2022) – Today in the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, the Member for Great Slave, Ms. Katrina Nokleby, introduced a Private Member’s Bill that proposes to change the name of the Great Slave electoral district to “Tindee” in the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act.

This is the first Private Member’s Public Bill brought forward by Ms. Nokleby during her time as an MLA. A Private Member’s Bill can be introduced by a Member who is not a Minister and cannot involve the spending of public funds or the imposition of a tax on citizens.

“It is my hope that by introducing this Private Member’s Bill, I can start a conversation with the public and Indigenous Governments about the name of this constituency and how it could better represent residents, be more culturally inclusive, and avoid confusion outside of the territory,” says Ms. Nokleby. “The bill proposes that “Great Slave” be replaced by “Tindee”, meaning big lake in Tłı̨chǫ Yatıì, but I want to stress that this could change if public opinion points to another preferred name.”
