Ombud Appointed as Acting Official Languages Commissioner

(YELLOWKNIFE) Thursday, December 5, 2024 – The Speaker of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly has announced the appointment of Ms. Krista Carnogursky, Ombud for the Northwest Territories, as the Acting Official Languages Commissioner, effective January 10, 2025. This decision, recommended by the Board of Management, ensures the continued advocacy and protection of language rights across the territory while the Assembly considers the future of the Official Languages Commissioner role.

The Ombud will assume the primary functions of the Official Languages Commissioner under the Official Languages Act, including ensuring recognition of the rights, status, and privileges of the Northwest Territories' 11 Official Languages. The role also includes investigating concerns about non-compliance with these rights. Assigning these responsibilities to the Ombud temporarily streamlines operations, enhances administrative efficiency, and leverages existing expertise within the Ombud Office.

Ms. Carnogursky, who has served as Ombud since July 2024, is known for her extensive experience in administrative fairness and her commitment to serving Northerners. This interim arrangement will provide the Assembly with the opportunity to evaluate the long-term structure of language advocacy services while maintaining uninterrupted support for language rights.
