Public Hearing on Use of Official Languages in the Legislative Assembly Postponed

(Yellowknife, NT) October 8, 2020 -- The Standing Committee on Rules and Procedures is postponing their public hearing on the use of Official Languages in the Legislative Assembly until November 17, 2020 at 7:00PM.

This Public Hearing on the use of Official Languages in the Legislative Assembly is a result of a  Point of Privilege raised on March 10, 2020 by the Member for Monfwi.

“The Committee wants to promote engagement and ensure public dialogue on this important issue as far and wide as possible before addressing this matter,” said Committee Chair Kevin O’Reilly. “As such, we will be postponing the meeting to further promote this meeting and extend our reach.”

“I am also pleased to say that proceedings of this upcoming public hearing will be simultaneously interpreted into both Tłı̨chǫ and French. If there are requests to make use of other Official Languages in the meeting, we will work to provide interpretation in those languages as well,” Mr. O’Reilly continued.

As this public hearing will be hosted via teleconference, stakeholders need to register with the Committee Clerk as witnesses to appear before Committee.

This public hearing will be streamed on ntassembly.ca as well as the Legislature’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages. After the meeting is over, fully interpreted videos of the meeting will be uploaded to YouTube.

Members of the Standing Committee include Chair Kevin O’Reilly (Frame Lake), Deputy Chair Rocky Simpson (Hay River South), Jackie Jacobson (Nunakput), Steve Norn (Tu Nedhé – Wiilideh) and the Honourable Shane Thompson (Nahendeh).
