Statements in Debates

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 3)

I’d like to thank the Minister for his answer. Can the Minister of Finance please tell us how the frontline public servants have been involved in providing recommendations to this government?

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 3)

Mahsi, Mr. Speaker. I'd like to follow up on my Member's statement with questions to the Minister of Finance. Can the Minister of Finance explain what he means by working together to make these hard decisions? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 3)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. On Friday, the Finance Minister provided the people of NWT with the government's fiscal update. It was interesting, to say the least. The Minister said the government is committed to fiscal responsibility and the government's Fiscal Responsibility Policy. He went on to say we need to live within our means, not just for today or just for this year, but for all four years of the 18th Assembly. After reading this, I tried to wrap my head around what he meant by “fiscal responsibility.” I spent the weekend doing research on what fiscal responsibility should mean to the...

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 2)

I'd like to ask the Minister, at this point in time, what role does the Municipal and Community Affairs staff have in getting this information out as well.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 2)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. As my Member’s statement talked about this morning, it was about process. Can the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs please explain the process used to get the Arctic Winter Games application process out to athletes across the Northwest Territories? Thank you.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 2)

I won't say anything bad about the Minister, if this was his response. I would ask the Minister: With this process of the Arctic Winter Games, will he commit to do a review of the selection process and how the team is made up and the government's role as part of it.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 2)

I may have not heard the answer I'm looking for. I was trying to find out how in the process that information was getting out to the people.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 2)

Sorry. Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I was daydreaming there for a second. Today I would like to take the House on a journey that was shared with me by a great-grandmother recently. Like all great-grandmothers, she had a vested interest in her great-grandchildren. She had a dream for each of them. The one she shared with me started some eight years ago, when her grandson started playing soccer. She had a dream that he would one day be successful; get the chance to play soccer on national and international stages.

Well, the international stage opportunity came with Arctic Winter Games this year. This...

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 1)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I'd like to recognize Mr. Michaud, former mayor in Fort Simpson; now he's retired. As well, Alyssa Carpenter who's one of my soccer daughters, I welcome her, and a couple of former colleagues Geoff Ray and Sheena Tremblay, and as well, Ms. Doyle, my favourite soccer mom.

Debates of , 18th Assembly, 2nd Session (day 1)

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Today I have the great honour to speak about a soccer tournament that was recently held in Fort Simpson, May 12 to 14. It is called the Paul Stipdonk Memorial. This is the third year this tournament was held in his name and the fourth year since it was developed. It is in the honour of this individual for his very active involvement in the community, region, and the Territories. Many who have known this individual has known him as a coach, teacher, volunteer, or recently before he passed away, as a bus driver. I am lucky to say that I have known this man and his family...
