Re-Appointment of Chief Electoral Officer

(YELLOWKNIFE) Tuesday, March 4, 2025  Today, the Legislative Assembly recommended to the Commissioner the reappointment of Stephen Dunbar as Chief Electoral Officer for another four-year term.

Mr. Dunbar’s is completing his first term as Chief Electoral Officer. Throughout his tenure, he has overseen a by-election and the 2023 Territorial General Election, navigating significant challenges such as evacuations and wildfires. He is currently leading a full repeal and replacement of the Elections and Plebiscites Act and is engaging with the NWT Association of Communities to discuss expanding Elections NWT’s mandate. In addition to his work in the territory, Mr. Dunbar has represented Elections NWT at the national and international levels, appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Procedure and presenting at an international conference on online voting.

The Board of Management uses an evaluation framework to ensure a more structured and objective reappointment process for statutory officers. Rather than initiating a new recruitment process, the Board determined that Mr. Dunbar’s leadership and contributions warranted his reappointment.
