Legislative Priorities Set in Motion: Committees Established in February Session

YELLOWKNIFE, Monday, March 11, 2024 – During the February Session, the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly established the Standing Committees of the 20th Assembly. These Committees, comprised of dedicated Members, play a crucial role in shaping legislation, policies, and decisions that impact the territory.  A new addition to the Assembly is the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).  The Committees reflect the Assembly's commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.
 
Standing Committees:
 
Reviews issues with government-wide implications, including devolution of federal powers and implementation of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Also oversees budget, taxation, and fiscal framework, reviews government reports on financial and performance results, coordinates House affairs, and considers various other matters referred by the House.

Inquires into matters referred by the Legislative Assembly, the Speaker, or the Board of Management. Reviews reports of the Chief Electoral Officer, the Integrity Commissioner, and the implications of self-government agreements on Legislative Assembly powers. Also reviews the Code of Conduct for Members, rules and practices of the House and its committees, and matters of privilege.

NEW to the Legislative Assembly:
 
Reviews and provides follow-up reporting on the Public Accounts and the Auditor General of Canada’s financial  or performance audits of territorial entities and programs. Also engages with audit partners to build capacity and best practices for audit review and follow-up. This committee consists of four regular members and one member of the Executive Council which differs from the other standing committees of regular members.
