Shane Thompson a été réélu à la 20e Assemblée législative des Territoires du Nord-Ouest après avoir siégé aux 18e et 19e Assemblées, représentant la circonscription de Nahendeh. M. Thompson est l'honorable président de la 20e Assemblée législative des Territoires du Nord-Ouest.

M. Thompson a été élu pour la première fois à la 18e Assemblée en novembre 2015 et a présidé le Comité permanent des affaires sociales. Il a également fait partie du Comité permanent des priorités et de la planification, du Comité permanent des règles et des procédures et du Comité de sélection.

M. Thompson est né le 11 juillet 1963 à Hay River. Après avoir vécu à Kugluktuk (Coppermine), à Inuvik, à Hay River et à Edmonton (au cours de ses études à l’Université de l’Alberta), il s’est établi à Fort Simpson en 1992.

M. Thompson a précédemment été, pendant deux mandats de trois ans chacun, administrateur élu au sein de l’Administration scolaire de district de Fort Simpson, exerçant le rôle de président durant les quatre dernières années. Au cours des 35 dernières années, il a siégé à divers conseils communautaires et territoriaux.

Avant d’être élu député, M. Thompson travaillait comme coordonnateur principal des sports et des loisirs au ministère des Affaires municipales et communautaires du gouvernement des TNO, dans la région du Dehcho.

M. Thompson a été diplômé du programme de leaders en loisirs communautaires du Collège de l’Arctique en 1989, et il suit actuellement un programme de certificat de maîtrise en évaluation à l’Université de Victoria et à l’Université Carleton. Il a également fait trois ans d’études pour obtenir un diplôme en éducation à l’Université de l’Alberta.

M. Thompson est un bénévole actif pour Northern Youth Abroad, la CBET et Fundamental Movement, ainsi que HIGH FIVEMD. De même, il a été membre du conseil d’administration de la Fédération sportive du Nord, de l’Association de balle molle des TNO et de l’Association des parcs et des loisirs des TNO, ainsi que président du terrain de golf Seven Spruce.

M. Thompson est père de sept enfants – cinq filles et deux fils – et a neuf petits-enfants.

Il est juge de paix depuis 1991.

Mr. Speaker, we heard the Minister of HR talk about the regional recruitment plan and he talked about a significant majority of the program participants are priority candidates under the Affirmative Action. Can he actually give us the number of the actual Affirmative Action candidates, please? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker, and thanks, colleagues. Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank Minister Moses, Minister Cochrane, and Minister Abernethy for coming to the region and hearing the concerns first-hand. In my opinion, the tour was very successful and beneficial.

As well, I would like to thank the whole Cabinet for coming to Fort Simpson on October 3, 2016, for the open house and coffee shop meeting. There were over 50 folks attending, which included Ministers' staff and general public, in attendance.

Mr. Speaker, I look forward to this session as we move forward. Mahsi cho, Mr. Speaker.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Yesterday I spoke about the Fort Simpson Health Centre. During the oral question period, I asked the Minister of Health and Social Services a question and was advised that the Department of Public Works and Services was the person to direct the question. Mr. Speaker, can the Minister of DPW please explain why the fenced off area was built behind the school on the new proposed site for the new health centre? Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Member’s Statement on Appointment of Sylvia Pascua-Matte to Prime Minister’s Youth Council

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, today I stand to speak about a young lady who has been selected to be part of the Prime Minister's Youth Council from my riding.

Mr. Speaker, I understand that Sylvia Pascua-Matte is the youngest member on this council. She's 17 years old. She will be completing her grade 12 this year and she is a student from Thomas Simpson School. This fall she plans on attending university. She is narrowing her research as we speak.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker, and I thank the Minister for his answer. In regards to long-term care, can the Minister explain the existing facility? Are they looking at utilizing that as long-term care as well, because I know he keeps giving the numbers out there. It's over 200 at a certain - I think 225 or 226. Can the Minister please elaborate on that?
